Building AI Agents

Go beyond chatting with AI and start building assistants that do the work, multi-step jobs like triage, draft, file and follow up, running on their own. We cover the architecture, the guardrails and the failure modes, then build a working agent around one of your real processes.

Overview

From asking AI to do a task, to handing one off entirely.

Most people use AI one question at a time. An agent is different: you hand it a job, triage these enquiries, draft the replies, file them, flag the ones that need you, and it carries out the steps on its own. Done well, it’s like adding a tireless junior team member. Done badly, it confidently does the wrong thing at scale, which is exactly why most DIY attempts quietly get switched off.

This session is about doing it well. We cover how agents are actually put together, the tools they call, how they remember, and how they decide, then the guardrails and failure modes that separate a useful agent from a liability. We finish by building a working agent around one of your real processes, with a human firmly in the loop where it matters.

Who it’s for: Owners, operators and technical-minded team members ready to move from using AI to building with it. You should be comfortable and regular with AI already (our intermediate courses, or equivalent experience). Bring a laptop and a real, repeatable process you’d like an agent to take on.

What you’ll leave with

Walk out able to…

A working agent and the judgement to build more. Here’s what you’ll leave with.

  • Understand agent architecture

Know the moving parts, steps, tools, memory and decisions, and how they fit into something dependable.

  • Choose the right jobs

Tell which processes suit an agent and which absolutely don’t, before you sink time into building.

  • Build a working agent

Leave with a real agent running against one of your own processes, not a toy example.

  • Design the guardrails

Put limits, approvals and checks in place so the agent stays inside safe, sensible boundaries.

  • Plan for failure

Anticipate the common ways agents go wrong and build in the human checkpoints that catch them.

  • Keep a human in the loop

Decide what the agent does alone and what it escalates, so you stay in control as it scales.
